Softball Game (6/14/2006) - Beware of Flying Bats

With a chance of rain in the forecast, TRx took on NCO Storm last night, in an effort to improve their record to .500. Despite the bulbous heads-up defense of Legrand to get an early double play, the game got off to an ominous start, as one of the early batters got a basehit to right-center, where former fake LaSalle soccer standout Mike Berardi eagerly awaited the ball. However, playing without his normal elf shoes, the Mad Elf fielded the ball, slipped, and fell to the ground as he attempted to throw the ball back into the infield. This error would prove costly, as NCO scored 2 quick runs to take the lead.

However, on this day the TRx bats finally came alive, with the team batting around and scoring 5 runs in the first inning for a lead they would never relinquish, fueled by consecutive extra base hits by Remington, Legrand, Gaspar, and Golden, and capped off by Ana's first RBI of the season. This was only the beginning of a stellar day for AT, who reached base three times, as she put in the extra effort while playing in front of her latest infatuated fan- the umpire. In addition to playing in front of her new sugar daddy ump, Ana was also trying to impress GLG, as she had previously commented on her attraction to his natural physique.

After this explosion in the first, Ben Lin, pitching with a sore shoulder after setting the new Blinternational weightlifting record at the gym the night earlier, settled down and put the game in the hands of his defense. For once, the defense was actually up for the challenge, as the stellar infield was error-free, highlighted by BLin's impressive barehanded fielding play and throw to first, another double play by Legrand, Remington, and Buonocore, Golden shaking and jiggling it at third, and Ana's cat-like reflexes behind the plate to snare a pop-up.

In the second inning, the hot bats of TRx continued to come through, as Orr once again led off the inning by getting on base and eventually scoring. Later in the inning, Golden showed the benefits of wearing pants (a lesson that Orr, Legrand, and Buonocore should have all learned from their previous sliding injuries; yet they continue to wear shorts). The Hit King hit a towering shot to the outfield, and rounded the bases with Berardi-like reckless abandon. In a close play at the plate, Golden somehow managed to contort his body and slide past the imminent tag to score the run, in what many are calling the slide of the year, to make it 9-2.

In the third inning, Berardi truly became the Mad Elf. After another pathetic swing and fly out, in a fit of Elf-rage, Berardi threw the bat against the fence and threw a tantrum. Up to that point, the bat-on-fence violence was the hardest hit B-Rad had. Embarrassed by such a display, the members of TRx berated B-Rad, and even the other team got in on the action, as there were numerous cries of "waaaaaaaaaa." The TRx fans (Dana, Bill, Sam, Kelly), fresh off supplying the team with a plethora of Gatorade, unleashed a torrent of boos at Berardi. Eventually, even Berardi realized the error in his ways, as when he thought back on it at the post-game happy hour, he threw up in his mouth and in his glass of beer (which he later drank).

TRx added an insurance run in the 4th, as Lori walked with the bases loaded to collect the RBI. With the safety of a 10-2 lead in hand, Manny decided to do his Berardi impression in the outfield, as on a base hit that dropped in front of him he did a little elf hop and let the ball roll past. The combination of Orr's blazing speed and Greg's steroid-filled arm (from all those days not going to the gym) nearly led to an amazing relay home for the out, but even giving up the run, seeing Manny's hop-skip-jump combo proved worth it.

In the 6th inning, the other team finally realized that Orr is a much better player than Berardi, and decided to pitch around Orr to get to B-Rad. However, as the great philosopher Jeff Kohl once theorized, this time the decision was like pulling out of a hot chick to stick it in an ugly chick, as NCO immediately regretted the decision after Berardi finally got a legitimate basehit, on which he scored after a 3 base error. TRx continued the rally, as Manny redeemed himself for his earlier error, hitting the ball to the exact same spot for the 5th time in the game, yet this time it dropped for a game-ending base hit to make it 15-5 for the mercy-rule victory for TRx.

Next game is Wednesday, June 21, where everyone eagerly awaits to see what Berardi will do next...
