Last night TRx took on Larry David and the rest of Konica Minolta for their last game before the playoffs. TRx was nervous from the start, as Golden mentioned that "this team is supposed to be good." Pregame jitters as well as a feisty little spider crawling around on her had Ana out of her element, while many other players were distracted by thoughts and discussions of an apparatus known only by the name "The Rabbit." Silly rabbit, trix are for kids...
With said nerves playing a large part, TRx played a poor first set, characterized by Mean Joe's numerous attempts to spike, only to hit the net and have the point taken away. In fact, in this first set, Joe may have hit the net more than he hit the ball. KB also had a poor attempt at a spike, as instead of going with the GLG-patented lefty hook, he hit the ball into the lower regions of the net. With such an uninspired performance, TRx fell in the first set 15-9, much to the disappointment of JR and Golden.
The second set started off poorly as well, with TRx still distracted by the dearth of fans. After record-setting attendance at last week's victory, no fans came out last night, and there as no Gatorade to be found anywhere within a 20 foot radius of the court. It appears that the fans were deterred by the softball teams performance last week, and believed that Berardi would have some involvement in the volleyball game as well, so they stayed away. However, there was no Berardi to be seen, although there were rumors that a small-headed, pointy-eared mad-elf-like character was dancing in the background after each TargetRx point saying something about Esprit...
Early in the second set, TRx continued to be embarrassed as during one pivotal volley, Golden and KB were spiked on by a girl. Said girl was clearly more intimidated by KB, as she hit to ball towards Golden, and let out a loud bellow, before punching him right in the baby-maker. Golden could barely hobble around the court for the next few series. However, once he regained his composure and strength, Golden and JR almost fought and came to blows (not necessarily in that order), over some further miscommunication on the court. Once Kim and Shannon broke up the fracas, TRx began to calm down and play their game. With JR motivating the team by talking about capitalizing and capitalization, TRx used no more lower case letters and took control of the perilous situation.
Blin, clad in his customary tight white shirt started them off by ripping his sleeves to get some air circulation in there and began to mock the book of text as he gained some sort of control over his monster serve. Earlier, even the other team was egging on Young Yenjamin, as before his serve their fearless leader proclaimed "Remember, he's long" to which the proverbial "She" nodded knowingly at what she has said many times... TRx closed out the second set with Golden getting his revenge, and spiking on a girl (a play that Mean Joe also succeeded with) and Larcker closing coming up with huge serves to secure the 15-11 second set victory.
In the third set, TRx rolled, with all members of the team making meaningful contributions. TRx played so well during the third set that even Ana managed to keep her cursing to a minimum (until the post-match TRx only scrimmage). TRx repeatedly took advantage of Larry David and his inability to hit the ball correctly, and rolled to a 15-3 third set for the win. JR also served for eight points during this set, as he mentioned numerous times at lunch... This victory brings TRx to 8-3, securing a playoff spot, and possibly a high seeding (but not high enough for the Seafood Factory's own Weed Mang to come to a game).
Playoffs are scheduled to start next week, so the next TRx game could come as early as 8/23, where the Volleyball team will demonstrate what its like not to choke in the playoffs (unlike Berardi).
